Weld Passivation

TFG Group is proficient in our capabilities to provide duplex stainless steel, aluminum, exotic alloy, coded pipe, and purge pipe welding along with sanitary tube welding.

We provide qualified welders and fabricators capable of welding to specific venture requirements or codes and ensures every weld complies with the relevant Australian Standard including AS3992, ISO, AS1554 andAS4041 and API and ASME 9.

TFG also uses orbital welding, a specialised area of welding, whereby the arc is rotated mechanically through 360° around a static workpiece in a continuous process. This process was developed to address the issue of operator error in gas tungsten arc welding processes (GTAW) and is used specifically for high-quality repeatable welding.

Our precision and accuracy are second to none meeting and exceeding client expectations in our Australia-wide workshops and at greenfield and brownfield sites.

TFG Group performs weld passivation to remove contaminants and create a surface that is resistant to corrosion. This process treats the surface of stainless steels, often with acid solutions. We also electropolish where a high spec surface finish is required using an electrochemical process. This enhances the corrosion-resistance of the stainless steel surface and accelerates the reformation of the passive layer.

Reasons for Weld Passivation:

  • Removal of weld discolouration
  • Removal of contaminants as contaminants are potential corrosion sites, which, if not removed result in premature corrosion and ultimately results in the deterioration of the component
  • Removal of scale and low chromium content metal
  • Restoration of chromium to heat affected area (HAZ)
  • Restoration of the protective oxide layer
  • Restoration of corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel

Weld passivation is undertaken on all stainless steel fabrications to ASTM A380 and is documented in line with our ISO 9001 quality assurance accreditation.
